How to identify a chord from its notes

Click notes on the piano keys above, or tap them on the guitar fretboard, and the chord finder names the chord from the notes you picked. You get the most likely name, other names for the same notes, the inversion, and diagrams to play it; press play to hear it. For a whole song, switch to the Audio tab and upload a file you have the rights to.

  1. 第 1 步

    Pick the notes

Click keys on the piano, or tap strings and frets on the fretboard. Choose the lowest note carefully: it decides the inversion.

  2. 第 2 步

    Read the chord

See the chord name, other names such as Am7 and C6, the inversion and a diagram. Press play to hear it next to what you played.

  3. 第 3 步

Or find the chords of a song

On the Audio tab, drop a song you have the rights to. Its chords appear on a timeline with the key and BPM; loop sections and export a chord chart.

D谁在用

Who uses a chord finder

  • Guitarists

Found a shape on the neck that sounds good? Use it as a guitar chord finder: tap the frets, get the name, and write it on the chart.

  • Pianists and keyboard players

Name a voicing from a score or lead sheet, or check which inversion you’re playing. It works as a piano chord finder with every alternative name listed.

  • Songwriters and producers

Name the chord you stumbled on, then upload a reference track you’re allowed to use and study how its progression moves.

  • Students and teachers

Check theory homework: build a chord from its notes and see its name, quality and inversion. Or guess first, then check.

E准确度与限制

How accurate is it?

When you pick the notes, there’s no guessing about which pitches are sounding, so naming the chord is music theory rather than estimation. The judgment call is which of several valid names fits your song, which is why alternatives are listed. Chord detection from audio is different: it’s an estimate, still in testing, and results will be published at launch.

Triads and seventh chords from picked notes良好The pitches are exact. When several names fit, the bass note and the key decide.
Extended and altered chords from picked notes一般Named when the defining notes are there. With notes left out, check the alternatives.
Two notes, or dense clusters一般Two notes are an interval, not a chord. Clusters may have no standard name.
Audio: acoustic guitar or piano with vocals测试中The clearest case for detection from audio. Results published at launch.
Audio: full band mixes测试中Bass, drums and effects add noise to the harmony. Results published at launch.
Audio: jazz extensions, slash chords, fast changes一般Often simplified to the nearest triad or seventh; short passing chords can merge.

Tips for better results

Small habits that make chord names easier to trust, from notes or from a recording.

  1. Pick the lowest note you actually play. The bass note decides the inversion, and sometimes the name.
  2. Doubled notes don’t change the chord. A C in two octaves is still one C.
  3. If a name looks odd, read the alternatives. Am7 and C6 contain the same four notes.
  4. Think about the key. In a song that keeps landing on Am, A–C–E–G is Am7; in one that lands on C, it may be C6.
  5. Chord names are in concert pitch. With a capo, count down: capo 2 means a sounding A is played with a G shape.
  6. For audio, use the highest-quality file you have. Guitar- or piano-led songs give clearer results than dense mixes.
  7. Loop two to four bars at a time when you learn a song from the timeline.
  8. Try Exact mode on solo piano or guitar recordings if Fast mode misses detail.

How a chord finder names a chord from its notes

A chord is a set of notes sounding together, usually stacked in thirds. C major is C, E and G: a root, a major third above it, and a perfect fifth. To name a chord, a chord identifier reduces your notes to pitch classes, ignoring octaves and doubled notes, then looks for the root that explains them most simply.

The quality comes from the intervals above that root. A major third and a perfect fifth make a major triad; a minor third makes it minor; add a seventh and you get a major, dominant or minor seventh chord. Ninths, elevenths and thirteenths stack more thirds on top, and sus chords replace the third with a second or a fourth.

Often more than one name fits. A, C, E and G spell Am7, but with C in the bass they read as C6. Neither is wrong: the bass note and the key decide which name a musician would write. That’s why the result lists the alternatives instead of picking one and hiding the rest.

Inversions and slash chords

A chord is in root position when its root is the lowest note. Put the third in the bass and it’s in first inversion; put the fifth there and it’s in second inversion. Lead sheets write these as slash chords: C/E is C major with E in the bass, and C/G is C major over G.

Inversions keep the harmony but change how it moves. Pianists use them so the right hand barely shifts between chords, and bass lines walk through them: C, C/B, Am, Am/G is a classic descending line. When you pick notes, choose the lowest one deliberately, since it decides the inversion and sometimes the name.

Guitar chord finder or piano chord finder: same theory, different hands

On a piano, every note has one key, so a chord’s notes are easy to see. On a guitar, the same chord has many shapes across the neck, and a shape you find by ear may skip the root, double the fifth or put an unusual note in the bass. The fretboard view turns each fretted string into a pitch, then names the set like any other chord.

That’s also why one guitar shape can carry two names: without the root in the bass, it may read as an inversion of one chord or as root position of another. Check the alternatives, play the chord back, and pick the name that fits the song. If you want the whole riff written out, not just the chord, Guitar Tab Generator turns a recording into tab.

Chord finder from audio: reading the timeline

For a whole song, the Audio tab works differently. It computes a chromagram, a running measurement of energy in each of the 12 pitch classes, compares each slice of the song with chord templates, and smooths the result so it doesn’t flicker on every passing note. Exact mode transcribes the notes first and names the chords from them, which is slower but can separate harmony from melody more cleanly.

The timeline colors chords by function. Tonic chords (I, vi) feel like home, subdominant chords (IV, ii) move away, and dominant chords (V, vii°) build tension that wants to resolve. In C major, the common I–V–vi–IV progression, C–G–Am–F, reads as home, tension, home, away. The song’s key sits alongside; Key Finder adds its Camelot code and scale.

Learn a song by that shape and you can play it in any key, or move a score into a new one with Transpose Sheet Music. Audio detection hears the whole mix, though, so a loud vocal, a walking bass or a distorted guitar can pull the result toward a different chord. Treat the timeline as a map and check close calls by ear. When you want the melody and voicings written out, not just the chord names, Audio to Sheet Music takes the next step.

Click the notes on the piano keys above, or tap them on the guitar fretboard, and the chord finder names the chord. You get the most likely name, other names for the same notes, the inversion if the lowest note isn’t the root, and diagrams. Press play to hear the chord and compare it with what you played.

Use the guitar fretboard and tap the fret you’re holding on each string you play, plus any open strings that ring. The guitar chord finder turns those frets into notes and names the chord, including the inversion when the lowest string isn’t the root. Play it back to check it against your guitar, and read the alternative names.

Yes. Click the keys you’re holding on the on-screen piano, in any octave, and the chord finder names the chord. Doubled notes don’t change the result, but the lowest key does, because it sets the inversion. Play the chord back to hear it, and check the alternative names if the first one doesn’t match your score.

Because the same notes can be heard in different ways. A, C, E and G spell Am7, but with C in the bass they read as C6. A chord identifier lists each reasonable name; the bass note and the song’s key decide which one a musician would write. When in doubt, pick the name that matches the bass line.

A chord is inverted when a note other than the root is the lowest note. C major with E in the bass is in first inversion, written C/E; with G in the bass it’s in second inversion, written C/G. The chord finder works out the inversion from the lowest note you pick, so choose that note deliberately.

Yes, on the Audio tab. Drop a song you have the rights to, and the chord finder lays its chords out on a timeline above the waveform, with the key and BPM. Loop a section to practice, then export a chord chart as a PDF or the chords as MIDI. Detection from audio is an estimate, so check close calls by ear.

Yes. Naming chords from notes and finding chords in an audio file are both free, with no sign-up, no ads and no watermark on the chord chart. Everything runs in your browser, so there are no server costs to pass on. Exact mode on the Audio tab is free too; it just takes longer, because it transcribes the notes first.

It’s an estimate, and accuracy depends on the recording. Clear major and minor chords in a guitar- or piano-led song are the easiest case; jazz extensions, slash chords and dense, effects-heavy mixes are the hardest. We’re still testing and will publish results at launch. Picking the notes by hand avoids that guesswork, because the pitches are known.

No. The chord finder doesn’t accept streaming or video links, and it doesn’t download audio from other services. It works with audio files on your device that you have the right to use, such as your own recordings or tracks you’re licensed to use. The file is analyzed in your browser and never uploaded to our servers.
