How to convert audio to sheet music

To turn audio to sheet music, upload an MP3, WAV or M4A of a piano or solo instrument and press Transcribe. The converter finds the notes, quantizes the rhythm, detects the key and time signature, and splits piano into two hands. Read along as it plays, adjust the settings, then export a PDF or MusicXML.

  1. 第 1 步

    Upload a recording

Drop an audio file you have the right to use. Solo piano, voice, violin, flute and guitar recordings give the cleanest scores.

  2. 第 2 步

    Transcribe and read along

Run the free Fast preview in your browser, or HQ for piano at 1 credit per minute. The score draws bar by bar as the recording plays.

  3. 第 3 步

    Adjust and export

Change quantize, key, time signature or the hand split and watch the score reflow. Export a PDF to print or MusicXML to keep editing.

C你能得到什么

What you get

  • F.01

    A score that writes itself

As the recording plays, a pen cursor engraves each bar. Right-hand and left-hand notes are colored so you can follow both staves.

  • F.02

    Key and time signature detected

The converter suggests a key and a meter from the notes it hears. Change either one and the whole score respells and rebars.

  • F.03

    Left and right hands split

Piano transcriptions come out on a grand staff, with each note assigned to a hand. Move the split point if a passage crosses over.

  • F.04

    Live settings panel

Quantize, Key, Time signature, Hand split, Transpose, Snap to key and Show uncertain notes all update the engraving as you change them.

  • F.05

    A proper title page

The exported PDF opens with your file name as the title and a small “transcribed by Audio2MIDI.org” credit, ready for the music stand.

  • F.06

    MusicXML for your notation app

Open the MusicXML in MuseScore, Dorico, Sibelius or Finale to fix details, add fingerings or arrange it further.

D谁在用

Who uses Audio to Sheet Music

  • Piano students

Get a starting score for a piece you can only find as a recording you own. Fix the few wrong notes by ear, then practice from the page.

  • Teachers

Turn a lesson recording into notation to show a student what they played. Compare it with the original score, bar by bar.

  • Composers and improvisers

Record yourself improvising and keep the parts worth keeping. A rough score is faster to edit than transcribing by hand.

  • Church and worship musicians

Write down an arrangement you play by ear so another player can cover the service. Transpose it for the singer’s key before printing.

E准确度与限制

How accurate is it?

Solo piano and single-instrument recordings give the most readable scores. A full band mix gives a crowded one, because every instrument lands on the same staff; separate the part you want first. We are measuring accuracy on a fixed test set and will publish the results at launch.

素材效果预期表现
Solo piano, clear recording良好The HQ piano model is built for this. Expect some rhythm spelling to tidy up.
Solo melody instrument or voice良好One line on one staff; vibrato and slides are rounded to the nearest note.
Fast, pedaled piano passages一般Sustain pedal blurs repeated notes; check runs and tremolos.
Song with band and vocals一般Separate the piano or vocal first, then transcribe that stem.
Rubato and free tempo测试中Bar lines may land in odd places when the tempo moves a lot.
F技巧

Tips for better results

A score is only as clean as the recording and the rhythm behind it. These habits make the biggest difference.

  1. Record close to the instrument, in a room with little echo.
  2. Play with a steady pulse if you can. A metronome in headphones helps the bar lines land correctly.
  3. Use the sustain pedal lightly; clear note releases give clearer rhythms.
  4. Upload the part on its own. For a song, separate the piano or vocal before transcribing.
  5. Set the time signature first, then the quantize grid, then the key.
  6. Turn on Show uncertain notes and check those bars against the audio.
  7. Export MusicXML if you plan to add fingerings, dynamics or lyrics.

Audio to Sheet Music vs. desktop software and open-source demos

Desktop software means installable transcription apps that produce notation. Open-source demos means research models with a web page, such as Spotify’s Basic Pitch, which our Fast mode is built on. We list features, not quality claims.

I详解

From sound to score in five steps

Turning a recording into sheet music is really five jobs in a row. First, if the recording has several instruments, the part you want is separated out. Second, a model listens for notes and reports each one with a pitch, a start time, a length and a loudness.

Third, the rhythm is quantized: start times in seconds become eighth notes, quarter notes and triplets. Fourth, the key and time signature are estimated, so a note becomes an F♯ rather than a G♭ and the bar lines fall in the right places. Fifth, the notes are engraved into a score with stems, beams, ties and rests.

Each step can be adjusted after the fact, which is why the settings panel exists. Changing the time signature re-bars the score; changing the key respells the accidentals; changing the hand split moves notes between staves. You do not need to transcribe again.

Why solo piano gives the cleanest score

Piano has a hard, clear attack on every note, which makes start times easy to find. It is also the most studied instrument in music transcription research, and the piano-specific model in HQ mode comes out of that work. Put those together and solo piano is the case where AI transcription is most useful today.

That shapes what a song to piano conversion can and can’t do. A recording of someone playing piano becomes a two-hand score. A full band song becomes a score of whatever is audible, not a piano arrangement: the melody, bass and chords all land on the same staves. Separate the part you want first, or start from the piano stem.

The hard cases are the ones a human transcriber also finds slow: heavy sustain pedal that blurs repeated notes, very fast runs, and a band where the piano hides under guitars and drums. For a song, separate the piano first, then transcribe the stem on its own.

MIDI, MusicXML or PDF: which export do you need?

A PDF is for reading and printing. It looks like a finished score, but you cannot change the notes in it without retyping them.

MusicXML is the notation file. It keeps the things a score needs and MIDI lacks: the key signature, how each note is spelled, which staff and voice it belongs to, ties, beams and the time signature. Open it in MuseScore, Dorico, Sibelius or Finale and keep editing.

MIDI is the performance file. It keeps exact timing and velocity, which is what a DAW wants, but it has no idea whether a note is an A♯ or a B♭. Use MIDI for production and MusicXML for notation.

If MIDI is all you need, MP3 to MIDI gives you a tempo-aligned .mid without engraving. If you already have a MIDI file, MIDI to Sheet Music turns it into notation with no transcription step, and Transpose Sheet Music moves the finished score into another key or for a B♭, E♭ or F instrument.

Reading and fixing an AI transcription

Most mistakes fall into a few groups. Octave errors put a note one octave too high or low, usually in the bass. Rhythm spelling shows a dotted rhythm as tied sixteenths, or a triplet as straight eighths. And quiet inner voices sometimes go missing under louder notes.

Start with the bars marked as uncertain, play them against the recording, and fix them in your notation app. Then check the rhythm: if many bars look crowded, try a coarser quantize grid or a different time signature before editing note by note.

If you’ve ever had to transcribe music by ear, the workflow will feel familiar, just faster. A transcription is a fast first draft, not a finished edition. Treat it the way you would treat a friend’s handwritten copy: useful, mostly right, and worth checking against your ears.

Yes, with limits. The converter separates the part you want, detects the notes, quantizes the rhythm, estimates the key and time signature, and engraves a score. Solo piano and single-instrument recordings give the most readable results. A full band mix works better when you separate one instrument first and transcribe that.

Yes, when the recording is piano, or one part you want to read on piano. A solo piano recording comes out as a two-hand grand staff, and the HQ piano model is built for it. For a full band song, separate the piano or vocal first and transcribe that part. The converter doesn’t arrange a whole band into an easy piano part.

Yes. MP3 to sheet music works like any other audio file: upload it, run the free Fast preview or HQ piano transcription at 1 credit per minute, and export a PDF or MusicXML. A 192 kbps or higher MP3 of a solo instrument gives the cleanest score, while very low bitrates can add ghost notes. WAV, M4A and FLAC work too.

It depends mostly on the recording. A clear, close-miked solo piano gives the cleanest scores, while heavy pedal, fast runs and room echo add errors. We are measuring accuracy on a fixed test set and will publish results at launch. Try the free preview on your own file first.

Yes. The converter suggests a key from the pitches it hears and a time signature from the pattern of strong beats. Both are shown in the settings panel, and you can change either one. Changing the key respells accidentals; changing the meter moves the bar lines. The notes themselves stay the same.

Yes. Piano transcriptions come out on a grand staff with every note assigned to the right or left hand, shown in two colors on screen. If a passage crosses hands, move the split point in the settings panel and the score reflows. MusicXML exports keep the two staves separate for editing.

We don’t accept video links. If you have the right to use a recording, for example your own performance or a file you are licensed to use, upload the audio file directly and transcribe it. Please only upload audio you have the right to use; use the score for your own study and practice.

You can export a PDF score, a MusicXML file and a MIDI file. Fast mode gives a watermarked PDF; HQ mode gives an unwatermarked PDF plus MusicXML. MusicXML opens in MuseScore, Dorico, Sibelius and Finale, and the MIDI file opens in any DAW, so you can keep working in the app you prefer.

Yes. In the browser you can change quantize, key, time signature, hand split and transposition, and the score reflows each time. For note-by-note edits, fingerings or lyrics, export MusicXML and open it in MuseScore, Dorico, Sibelius or Finale. You can also clean up the MIDI in our MIDI Editor.

The Fast preview is free and covers the whole recording, with a watermarked PDF. HQ piano transcription costs 1 credit per minute, rounded up. Credits come with Pro at $9.99 a month for 60 credits, or a one-time pack of 50 credits for $9.99 that never expires. New accounts get 5 free credits.
