Fair is fair

When Basic Pitch is the better choice

  1. 01

    You're a developer

Basic Pitch is a library you can run in your own app or pipeline, in TypeScript or Python, under Apache-2.0. We're a finished tool, not a library.

  2. 02

    You only need raw MIDI

If you want notes with pitch bends and no score, the Basic Pitch demo does that for free. Our Fast mode is the same model with score output on top.

  3. 03

You want to run it on your own machine

As an open-source library, Basic Pitch can run wherever you install it. Our tools load in the browser and need a connection.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Yes. Basic Pitch is open source under the Apache-2.0 license, and Spotify hosts a free web demo. The license allows commercial use as long as you keep the license and notices, which is how we use it in our Fast mode; see our Licenses page.

No. Basic Pitch outputs MIDI notes with pitch bends. A score needs another step that quantizes the notes, picks a key and time signature, splits the hands and engraves the result. Audio2MIDI.org does that step and exports PDF and MusicXML.

Fast mode runs Basic Pitch in your browser, so the audio stays on your device. HQ mode sends the file to our servers, where a piano-tuned transcription model runs; stems use a separation model first. Open-source parts and their licenses are on our Licenses page.

Basic Pitch is a note transcription model. Its documentation describes it as instrument-agnostic and most reliable on one instrument at a time; splitting a mix into stems isn't part of it. Our Premium plan separates stems first, then transcribes each one to its own MIDI track.

What you upload and what you get back are yours to use, as far as your own rights in the music go: converting a song doesn't give you rights to its composition or recording. The licenses of the models and libraries we use are listed on our Licenses page.

Hear it before you pay.

Drop a recording, a PDF score or a MIDI file. Free tools run in your browser, and paid work always shows its cost first.
